crocodile under water

Scientists hold the view that these large reptiles swallow stones not only to digest food, but also to help them venture deeper in their natural abodes. A stone can sit in the croc’s belly even for many years. Mechanical grinding action breaks down the food and also acts as ‘balast’, helping crocodiles stay submerged. In fact this process even has its name and is known as geophagy. The stones the crocodiles ingest are known as gastroliths.
