One gallon of motor oil change (approximately 4.5 litres), can contaminate a million gallons of fresh water. Used oil cannot readily dissolve in water and is very slow to degrade in the environment. One spilled pint of oil will produce a slick of oil nearly one acre in size and ruin a year’s supply of fresh water for 50 people. A lot of oil from industrial wastes ends up in the oceans. Fish and birds exposed to oil spills very often will develop growth, reproductive problems, liver and many other diseases. Shell and other major companies are responsible for spilling diesel and other contaminants into the North Sea on a daily basis. Government statistics show that the Shell group has been responsible for 20 pollution accidents in British waters just over a six-month period.
